The year of 2008 has just passed away, but this year was an unusual year. In the storage industry, the price of DDR2 and high capacity disk becoming lower and lower, which attracts the most users.  
Today, PConline evaluating department receives the Solid State Disk which is sent by Shenzhen KingSpec company---KSD-PA25.1-256MJ and KSD-SA25.1-128MJ. KSD-PA25.1-256MJ is the first 256GB SSD in 2.5 inch in China, which is with the highest capacity of the mostly brands in China.

The package of this two Solid State Disk from KingSpec is very simple,which uses the environmental gift box package. It shows the 2.5 inch SATA 256G Solid State Disk and 2.5 inch SATA 128G Solid State Disk on the viewy place of the package.

The model No.,capacity, interface,and the information about the approval of FCC, CE certificate can be see on the front label of the two products. The capacity is the only difference between the two products, so we choose the 256GB Solid State Disk to introduce.

KSD-PA25.1-256MJ uses the white plastic shell design, the dimension is length 100.2mm*width 69.8(mm)*thickness9.5(mm). Campared to the usual 3.5 inch hard disk, its volume is much smaller.

On the back side of  KSD-PA25.1-256MJ, we can see 4 sheet metal which is used to fix the mainframe and SATA 3.0Gb/s interface. 
 
From the above picture, we can see that, the KSD-PA25.1-256MJ Solid State Disk appears very thin compared with NOKIA3110c. Their length is similar, and is easy to take. It is very light, only 70g. 

From KSD-PA25.1-256MJ, we can see that, there are bidirectional solid screw in each corner, which is easy to install.

After opening the shell, we can see that, the inside structure of the KSD-PA25.1-256MJ is very simple. Except two shells, there is a PCB board between them.

On the PCB board of KSD-PA25.1-256MJ, the 16pcs flash is the most remarkable, which distributes on the front and back side of the PCB board averagely.
 
KSD-PA25.1-256MJ uses JMF602 from JMicron and MLC Sumsung NAND Flash(K9MDGO8U5M). The single capacity of the flash is 16G.

Next, let us see the real ability of KSD-PA25.1-256MJ. The writer choose Intel E5200 processor, Acer P5K DELUXE motherboard, Apacer 2GB memory and GF9800GT display card, the operating system is Windows XP SP3.
Testing Result:First, HD Tune 2.55 testing software is used. It can check the disk's transfer rate, burst data transfer rate, data access time, CPU usage rate, health status, temperature and scan the surface of the disk and so on. It can also check out the firmware edition, serial number, capacity, cach'size and the current transfering mode.

From the above picture, we can see that, the average speed of KSD-PA25.1-256MJ is 134.5MB/s, which is 116.4MB/s higher than Seagate's.The reation time of KingSpec(0.2ms) is much faster than Seagate(15.4ms)

Through another testing software(HD Tach), the average read speed of KSD-PA25.1-256MJ is 141.8MB/s and the burst transfer rate is 175.1MS/s. But the average read speed of Seagate is 129.1MB/s and its burst transfer rate is 386.3MB/s.
ATTO Disk Benchmark is a testing tool for disk/net performance produced by ATTO. It uses the test pack of 4MB, which tests the read and write speed separately by 0.5K,1.0K,2.0K till 1024KB. After the testing finished, the data will be expressed by histogram, which will explain that the different size of the file will affect the speed of the disk.

In the testing of ATTO, we can see that KSD-PA25.1-256MJ's writing speed is much different from its reading speed. Its reading speed is 140MB/s, and its writing speed is 90MB/s. Apparently, this result is related with the storage unit of the Solid State Disk. As all of us know, the flash chip is much faster in reading, but slower in writing.

In PCMARK 05, we can see that KSD-PA25.1-256MJ breaks 13552 points, but Seagate is only 7550 points.
PConline evaluating summary:

Over all, this model KSD-PA25.1-256MJ from KingSpec is good from different aspects. It is better than traditional disks in performance and noise. It will effectively approve complete performance and portability when it is used in notebook. But we have to admit that Solid State Disk still has its shortcoming. It mainly manifests in much different write/read speed, faster reading speed, but slower writing speed than traditional disk. However, the complete performance of the disk is up to both reading and speed. So this is the main reason that the complete performance of Solid State disk can't be approved largely.
Currently, the price of these two Solid State Disk is separately 4459RMB and 1699RMB, which is far from the common consumers. However, as the Solid State Disk matures gradually, the manufacturing technology approved continually, the capacity of Solid State Disk is doubled. Meanwhile, the cost of the Solid State Disk is decreased constantly. So high capacity Solid State Disk taking place of traditional disk will be one of the industry tendency which will be most expected by people.
