Different Types of RAM Explained

Views: 919 Author: Site Editor Publish Time: Origin: Site

RAM stands for Random Access Memory. Every computer comes with RAM. It has been further divided into two types.

Types of RAM you need to know about

The following are the two types of RAM.

Dynamic RAM

DRAM is the computer’s memory that consists of a transistor and a capacitor within an integrated circuit. Every data bit gets stored in a capacitor. DRAM needs to get refreshed after every millisecond because the transistors will leak information slowly, and the capacitors will also discharge. It will make the information drain out of the system. So, refreshing is necessary for retaining data.

Advantages of Dynamic RAM

Following are the advantages of getting a Dynamic RAM in your system:

· Simple easy to understand design

It is necessary to understand the design of the memory that you will be using in your system. So, the benefit of using DRAM would be that it has an easy design that you can understand easily as compared to any other memory option.

· Low-cost option

Getting memory for your computer will be an expensive deal, but when it comes to DRAM, it is one of the low-cost options you can consider right away.

Disadvantages of Dynamic RAM

The following are the disadvantages of getting a Dynamic RAM in your system:

· High power consumption

DRAM requires refreshing after every millisecond, so you can imagine the consumption of electricity it will have to keep getting refreshed so you can keep using your system.

· Unstable memory option

DRAM is not a stable memory option because the transistors in DRAM keep leaking information in the drain.

Static RAM

Static RAM is not like Dynamic RAM. That only temporarily stores data and will not keep leaking information drain. Static RAM is made up of four to six transistors. As long as you supply power to your system, the data will be stored in the Static RAM. It requires refreshing periodically. Static RAM is faster than DRAM and is an expensive option.

Advantages of Static RAM

The following are the advantages of getting Static RAM in your system:

· Faster memory processing

SRAM is faster than DRAM, which means you will be able to carry operations on a faster face as compared to any other memory option.

· Ideal for creating a cache

If you want to create a sensitive cache because you will require that information while you are using the computer and you want to have access all the time, then you can do it with SRAM.

Disadvantages of Static RAM

The following are the disadvantages of getting Static RAM in your system:

· Difficult to change content

The information you save on an SRAM stays until you turn off the electricity supply. Otherwise, if you want to change any content, you won’t be able to do that with professional help.

· An expensive option

SRAM is more expensive than DRAM or any other memory option. One of the drawbacks might disturb the buyer a little bit.

Now you know both types of RAM, their benefits and disadvantages. If you are designing a system and have to choose the best memory option, then you can go for STAM if you are looking for stability. If you are low on budget, then go for DRAM.
