1. Preparation

Before starting, remember to give your SSD a quick check-up. Back up those precious photos, documents, and files to another storage device.

2. Connect the SSD

Ensure your portable SSD is properly connected to your computer via a USB or other appropriate cable.

3. Open Disk Management Tool

Windows System:

• Press Win+R, type “diskmgmt.msc”, and press Enter to open the Disk Management tool.

• In the Disk Management tool, locate and identify your portable SSD.

macOS System:

• Open the “Applications” folder, then find and open “Disk Utility” in the “Utilities” folder.

• In Disk Utility, locate and identify your portable SSD.

4. Format the SSD

Windows System:

• In the Disk Management tool, right-click the partition or the entire disk of your portable SSD and select “Format.”

• In the pop-up window, select the file system type (such as NTFS, exFAT, etc.). Choose the appropriate file system based on your needs.

• Check the “Quick Format” option to speed up the formatting process (if disk checking and repair are unnecessary).

• Click the “Start” button to begin the formatting process.

macOS System:

• In Disk Utility, select your portable SSD, then click the “Erase” button.

• In the pop-up window, select the file system type (such as APFS, Mac OS Extended, etc.) and enter a name (optional).

• Click the “Erase” button to start the formatting process.

5. Wait for Formatting to Complete

The formatting process may take some time, depending on the capacity and performance of the SSD. Please be patient until the formatting is complete.

6. Check the SSD

After formatting, ensure that the SSD capacity and file system type meet your expectations. You can view the relevant information in the Disk Management tool or File Explorer.

Important Notes

• Choose the File System Type Carefully: Different file system types have different features and compatibility. Select the appropriate file system type based on your needs and device compatibility.

• Avoid Frequent Formatting: Frequent formatting of the SSD may negatively impact its lifespan. Try to avoid unnecessary formatting operations.

• Ensure Stable SSD Connection: During the formatting process, ensure the SSD is stable and reliably connected to the computer. An unstable connection may result in formatting failure or data loss.

By following these steps, you can effectively format your portable SSD and give it a new start!
