What is Power Loss Protection (PLP)?

Power Loss Protection (PLP) is a specialized technology designed for Solid State Drives (SSDs). It ensures data integrity when the host experiences an abrupt power loss. By increasing the number of capacitors, PLP extends the time available for data to complete its transfer. When the power is restored, these charged capacitors act like a backup battery for the SSD, ensuring that data can be written completely, even if the power is lost unexpectedly.

PLP ensures that data being processed or cached in volatile memory, such as DRAM, is securely written to non-volatile flash memory. This significantly reduces the risk of data corruption during unexpected power loss events, a crucial benefit for individuals, businesses, and organizations alike. A well-designed SSD will implement hardware-based PLP using on-board power-holding capacitors and/or firmware-based PLP, where critical metadata information is written to flash to ensure successful recovery when power is restored.

Early SSDs had less robust power loss recovery capabilities, and data loss due to power interruptions was more common. In many of these early cases, power loss events resulted in SSDs failing to recover, leading to data loss.

How Does PLP Work?

When the voltage supplied to the SSD suddenly drops, for example, from 5V to 4V, the voltage detector activates the PLP system. In this state, PLP ensures the secure storage of data in memory, with built-in capacitors providing the necessary power to move data from the DRAM cache to the flash memory. When the voltage falls below 2.3V, the flash enters write protection mode, preventing any further data writes to memory. This process helps maintain data integrity during unexpected power interruptions.
