What Is SSD Trim?

The widespread fact that an SSD is faster than a regular hard drive is undeniable. Even though hard drives are cheaper, it's smart to spend a few extra bucks on an SSD when you're looking for speed.

SSD trim is a term that you should know if you planning to get an SSD, it’s one of the numerous advantages of getting an SSD.

Does SSD trim?

SSD TRIM is an Advanced Technology Attachment (ATA) application that enables a framework to flash a NAND solid-state drive (SSD) that can discard blocks of information because it is not currently being used. Using TRIM can work in providing hybrid information to SSDs and increase SSD lifespan.

But did you know that there can be a decrease in SSD performance if the background garbage collection method is not enabled on your SSD? Let’s dive deeper!

SSD

What role does trim play?

A Trim command lets the SSD know that certain regions contain information that is not currently being used. According to the customer's point of view, this information was erased from a report. Due to the way the solid-state unit reads and compiles the data, the information is not erased by the unit as per the customer's request.

All things being equal, the region of the SSD that contains the information is separated as is currently unused. The Trim command lets the unit know that information can be trimmed. Whenever the PC is idle, Active Garbage Collection will erase the information. It generally prolongs the life of the SSD.

The workings of a Trim command?

There are various processes involved in the working of a trim command;

· Memory on SSD is divided into blocks and blocks into pages. Unlike operating systems, SSDs do not support file systems and therefore only understand blocks rather than pages.

· When a trim command is executed, the operating system sends a signal to the SSD to transfer the specific page information to the block that should be marked as ready to be used to replace the existing data.

· As the garbage collection process occurs, the illegal files are cleaned up, leaving more space for user data.

· Depending on the number of reads, write and page/block delete cycles, the SSD life cycle is reduced. Thus, the use of this command completely avoids erasing cycles on the pages specified to be deleted, thus increasing the lifespan of the SSD.

Check if the trim function is enabled on your computer

Below are steps to check if the trim function is available on your windows system;

Step 1: Navigate to the cmd command on your start menu.

Step 2: Run the command as an administrator.

Step 3: Enter the command "fsutil behavior set DisableDeleteNotify=0" on the terminal

Step 4: If “DisableDeleteNotify=0” is displayed, Trim is enabled.
