How to Use an External SSD as a Boot Drive?

Views: 10995 Author: Site Editor Publish Time: Origin: Site

Having your external drive as a boot drive can be beneficial in so many ways. It can be helpful if the OS on the internal drive corrupts or if you want to have a user profile that nobody knows about. Apart from these, external SSD brings storage and faster speed capabilities, but have you ever thought about how you can use this drive as your boot drive?

A step-by-step guide to using an external SSD as your boot drive.

Below are all the steps you need to follow to use your SSD.

1. Begin with preparing your external solid-state drive for the process

Using USB drives and external solid-state drives as a boot drives brings a different experience. When using an external drive, you need to go through a preparation process, so follow the steps below:

·  Connect the drive to the PC and format it with the disk management tool

· Change the file system to NTFS, and you may make partitions if your drive has enough space

Your external drive is ready to install the OS, so you may proceed with the next steps.

2. Install the desired operating system on your SSD

Before beginning this process, you will need to download the ISO file of the required OS version on your PC. Once the download is complete, you may follow the following steps:

· Download the WinToUSB tool and locate the ISO file for the OS

· Now select your external drive as the install destination and select the right partition scheme

· Now proceed with the installation and wait for it to be complete.

After the installation, you can remove the SSD from your PC, but you are not done yet.Z4 Portable SSD

3. Enter BIOS settings and set the external drive as your boot drive

The final step in this process will be setting the boot priority in the BIOS settings. It is usually set to the internal drive, and the best part is that you have to change the priority order only once. Whenever you boot up your PC, it will check whether the priority drive (external drive) is available.

When available, it will boot up with that drive. Otherwise, the PC will automatically boot up with the internal drive as normal. Here are the steps you must follow to do this:

· Start the computer and enter BIOS settings by pressing the BIOS key repeatedly before the computer starts.

· Go to the boot options tab and look for priority or order option

· Now you need to move your external drive to the top of the list

· Save these changes and exit the BIOS settings

Now, whenever you start your PC with an external drive connected, it will boot using that drive. Otherwise, the OS on the internal drive will boot as usual.

Choose the best external solid-state drive you can use as a boot drive on any PC.

Even if you need the external SSD only to use as a boot drive, there is much more that you can do with it. Selecting one with the best specifications and higher space can help you use all its features. So, always make the right decision according to your requirements when buying an SSD.
