What Is A Solid State Drive? How Does It Work?

Views: 1249 Author: Site Editor Publish Time: Origin: Site

Solid State Drives, or SSDs for short, appeared about a decade ago, and the first batches were very expensive. The most important advantage of this kind of hard disk is the data read and write speed. SSD far surpasses the classic disk-hard disk in terms of write/read speed. However, the short lifespan of solid-state drives is a fly in the ointment.

SSD application history

The classic use of an SSD is as a system drive. Only the operating system is installed on it, and all necessary data is stored on a large-capacity mechanical disk, which is also a precaution.

On some laptops, small-capacity SSDs of no more than 20-40 GB are used with regular mechanical hard drives, a combination that combines the speed of an SSD with the capacity and reliability of an HDD. The OS is booted from a fast solid-state drive. Games and programs, as well as important files, are stored on a mechanical hard drive. In this way, even the failure of the SSD will not result in data loss.

In fact, we can conclude that SSDs are very fast, but very unreliable. But let's not rush into a decision either. Because it also has many advantages.

How SSDs work

The structure of data storage in SSDs is very interesting. SSD manufacturers are interested in improving their features, constantly improving firmware algorithms to extend the life of the disk. SSD storage is flash memory with a limited number of cell overlays.

The weakest part is the remaining free space. When the disk is accessed for writing, the firmware itself decides where to write that data, consuming the resources of all free cells equally. After a storage unit reaches the maximum number of rewrites, it is marked as failed and a spare unit is taken to replace it.

The number of spares is not huge, but the disk will still work for a while until it completely uses up all available spares. When all spare units are exhausted, the disk protects all data and switches to "read-only" mode, which in principle is the end of its life cycle, and only the necessary data can be saved from it to another place.

How long will the SSD last?

The main indicator of disk durability is TBW (Total Byte Written). The higher the value, the longer the life of the disk. TBW is measured in terabytes, which is exactly how much the disk is guaranteed to write to itself.

You can use special programs to determine the intensity of use. If a disk is completely filled with data and wiped every day, its claimed resources will last 560-600 days. Of course, this is not how disks are used in everyday life. Also, it's worth noting that TBW is a manufacturer-guaranteed metric. Even doubling this value, a high-quality product will keep functioning properly.
