What Is A Solid State Drive Made Of?

Views: 942 Author: Site Editor Publish Time: Origin: Site

Open the outer packaging of a solid-state drive and you will find a circuit board. This is the body of the solid state drive (the SATA interface has a shell). There are many electronic components on this circuit board, but there are only three main structures, namely the main control chip, flash memory particles and cache particles. Next, let's take a look at what each of these hardware does.

Main control chip

The main control chip, as the name suggests, plays the main control role. It is responsible for the connection between the flash memory chip and the external data interface, as well as adjusting the data read and write between the flash memory chips to ensure their wear and tear balance.

The stronger the performance of the main control, the better the data processing and data read/write control of the flash memory chip will be. It can better exert the performance of flash memory particles, and the solid-state drive is less prone to heat and speed drops when reading and writing data.

Cache particles

In a sense, the main control is similar to the computer CPU, and the cache particles act as memory. Its main function is to quickly undertake external data. Data is first stored in cache granules and then written to flash granules.

In the selection of the soldering position of the circuit board, the cache particles are also the same as those of the computer, and are generally placed next to the main control. Because the design ideas between solid-states are different, in addition to being placed separately, the cache particles may also be integrated on the main control chip. So those who didn't find cache particles on the SSD don't need to be panic.

Cache particles are volatile memory, and data will be emptied in the event of a sudden power failure. Most mainstream solid-state drives now use LPDDR4 type of cache particles, which have the characteristics of fast read and write speed and low power consumption.

Flash Particles

Finally, when the flash memory particles leave the factory, the flash memory particles are the real data storage place in the solid state drive. It is a non-volatile memory that retains written data in the event of a power failure.

NAND flash memory particles are used in solid-state drives. Due to the difference in electronic unit density, NAND flash memory can be divided into SLC (single-level memory cells), MLC (double-layer memory cells), TLC (triple-layer memory cells) and QLC (four layers of memory cells).

These types of storage units have obvious differences in production cost and service life. The higher the number of layers, the lower the unit storage cost and the lower the service life and read and write performance.

The quality of these three components is closely related to the performance of SSDs. The three complement each other, and one of them has a weak performance, which will reduce the overall experience of the SSD.
